Founded in 2008 in Djanet, in the heart of the Tassili n’Ajjer, Tissilawen blends Tuareg musical heritage with a modern, globally resonant sound. Born from the shared vision of singers and guitarists Bakrin Timlfati and Cheikh Taberni, the band carries forward a rich cultural legacy while shaping a contemporary identity.
Over the years, the project has evolved through key collaborations, notably with Manoo Baly Othmani and percussionist Smman Mefatih, whose traditional rhythms brought depth and texture to the band’s sound.
Today, Tissilawen continues to grow with new musicians, refining a distinctive musical signature that bridges tradition and modernity, desert blues and global influences.
Tissilawen takes its name from the Tamasheq word ⵜⵙⵏⵏⵓⵏ, meaning “The Tassilis,” in tribute to the Tassili n’Ajjer massif — a powerful symbol of their hometown and a deep source of identity.
This land, shaped by nomadic traditions and the ancient memory of the desert, infuses their music with the spirit of the Ténéré — its rocks, its silence, and its breath.
Musically, the band is part of the modern Tuareg music movement. Heirs to pioneers such as Tinariwen, they also draw inspiration from artists like Terakaft, Hassan Hakmoun, Keddou, and Bombino.
Tissilawen’s sound blends Tuareg musical roots with rock, blues, reggae, and rap influences, creating a style that is both traditional and contemporary. This fusion reflects their nomadic heritage and openness to the world, expressing a desire to connect the spirit of the Sahara with global musical influences.
